Field Philosophy

Explore first.
Design the route after.

EXPLOOR Chachapoyas was born from scouting new paths, exploring ancient trails, and working hand in hand with the communities protecting northern Peru.

Our premise is simple: every route is described with complete transparency. How long you hike, maximum altitude, what might get challenging due to weather or mud, and what details need confirmation. We want you to travel with confidence, honoring cultural heritage and directly benefiting host communities.

FIELD NOTE · AMAZONAS

“A well-told route must also tell you where there is mud, high altitude, or a demanding stretch.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Practical information to plan your arrival in Chachapoyas and enjoy your hikes to the fullest.

The dry season runs from May through October, ideal for extended trekking and clear blue skies. However, between November and April (rainy season), waterfalls like Gocta and Yumbilla boast their most thunderous flow and landscapes are intensely lush green. At Exploor, we adapt gear and scheduling all year round.

Chachapoyas city is at 2,335 m.a.s.l. (7,660 ft), a very comfortable altitude for most travelers. Kuélap sits at 3,000 m.a.s.l. (9,840 ft) and high-mountain routes like Shubet or Laguna de los Cóndores exceed 3,600 m (11,800 ft). We recommend acclimatizing on day one with gentle walks (such as Gocta or Quiocta), staying well hydrated, and drinking coca or muña tea.

Yes, the cable cars operate normally from Nuevo Tingo station. However, entrance into Kuélap Fortress is regulated by the Ministry of Culture with daily capacity controlled by timed entry slots. That is why booking in advance is essential to guarantee your spot.

It is rated as a demanding expedition. Day one requires 8 to 10 hours of hiking through steep terrain, mud, and high-altitude páramo. Good aerobic conditioning and prior mountain trekking experience are recommended. We provide pack horses and local muleteers who support the entire expedition.
