While the small local airport does not host high-frequency commercial jet flights, three dependable air and overland routes connect travelers smoothly and safely.
Option 1: Fly to Jaén Airport (Shumba - JAE) · The Quickest Route
This is the preferred route for travelers with tight vacation schedules:
- Flight: Lima (LIM) to Jaén (JAE) via domestic carriers such as LATAM (1 hour 20 minutes).
- Overland Transfer: From Jaén Airport directly to Chachapoyas via shared tourist van or private transport (approx. 3.5 to 4 hours along paved highway).
- Advantage: You arrive in Chachapoyas the very same afternoon, well-rested and ready to start full-day expeditions first thing the next morning.
Option 2: Fly to Tarapoto Airport (TPP) · The Jungle & Highland Combo
Tarapoto enjoys numerous daily direct flights from Lima:
- Flight: Lima to Tarapoto (1 hour 15 minutes).
- Overland Transfer: Tarapoto to Chachapoyas (6 to 7 hours) crossing through Moyobamba and the scenic mountain pass of Rioja.
- Advantage: Perfect for a multi-destination itinerary: 2 days of tropical waterfalls and cuisine in Tarapoto followed by 3 or 4 days of archaeology and trekking in Chachapoyas.
Option 3: Executive Overnight Sleeper Bus from Chiclayo or Trujillo
Ideal for backpackers and travelers exploring the Moche Route along Peru’s northern coast:
- Service: Premium bus lines (such as Movil Bus or Civa) offer night departures with 160° or 180° lie-flat bed seats.
- Duration: Depart Chiclayo at 8:00 pm, arriving in Chachapoyas around 6:00 am (approx. 9 to 10 hours).
- Advantage: Saves a night of hotel accommodation and gets you into town early in the morning.
